Submarine Channel

In 2003, radio presenter Chris Bajema and journalist Martijn de Waal took a trip along the Chinese East coast, carefully documenting their experience through the online platform Seven Weeks In China. Pushing the boundaries of innovative storytelling, the project represents one of Submarine Channel’s first attempts at conquering the transmedia format.

Back in November and December of 2003 Chris Bajema and Martijn de Waal engaged on a special journey, from Hong Kong to Beijing. An amazing 3000 kilometers (approximately!), of contemporary China to explore. During those seven weeks Chris and Martijn published daily diary fragments, pictures and interviews on zevenwekeninchina.nl. And, once a week, a radio documentary was broadcasted by the VPRO show ‘De Ochtenden’.

This project has been the starting point of a new format developed by Submarine Channel, called RoadTrip. Whereas traditional websites for documentaries, films and other media productions alike offer a digitalized poster at best, these online documentaries complete the journey of the director by publishing work in progress footage, diaries, pictures and much, much more. Seven Weeks in China thus provides a much more immersive experience for the users, while in the same time, prompting Submarine Channel to further their explorations into transmedia potential.
