Five years ago we made this “Dutch Profile” about Dutch designer Wieki Somers. In her hands, ordinary objects become stimuli for a more poetic take on our daily lives. This year, Wieki is one of the finalists for the Dutch Design Awards in the category product design. The winners will be announced Saturday 29, 2016, during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven.

Together with our partners Mindshakes, 3LAB, VPRO Dorst, and animation studio BosBros we’re looking for talented and original young filmmakers with a great idea for a short film, documentary or animation. If you’re based in The Netherlands and your concept is selected, you’ll receive a contribution of €5k to make it, provided you crowdfund €5k yourself (with the support and advise of Cinecrowd). Our interactive documentary Refugee Republic is part of a new exhibition at the The Museum of Modern Art, “Insecurities: Tracing Displacement and Shelter.” The show explores how designers and artists have responded to the global refugee crisis”. Projected onto the floor is the hand-drawn map Jan Rothuizen made of Camp Domiz in Northern Iraq. The website can be explored via the monitor.
