Trust in the Blockchain Society is a smartphone documentary featuring a series of interactive interviews with trailblazing blockchain experts, including former broker and journalist Brett Scott, crypto-economist Shermin Voshmgir and artist Kei Kreutler.

Powered by an innovative interface that allows the viewers to navigate the questions of the interviews, the documentary unpacks a complex topic such as blockchain in an accessible yet comprehensive way.

Taking a critical stance on the issue, directors Leonardo Dellanoce and Francesco Degl’Innocenti explore blockchain by framing it in the long history of decentralized technologies, aiming to uncover its true potential and to inquire the social consequences of its deployment.

Francesco: “According to historians, trust is the basis of every civilization, according to economists it is the basis of every economy. Now there is blockchain, a technology that claims trust is no longer needed. We open the discussion how this redesigns our concept of trust and thus influences our lives, separate from the complex technology behind it. Compare it to a conversation about smartphone use: you don’t need to know how the device is technically put together to understand the social impact it has on our lives.”

Blockchain is still in full development: the discussion about how it should be used is far from over. That is precisely why it is so important that a broader audience is part of the conversation, says maker Leonardo: “With social media we only started asking critical questions about usage and privacy when this type of interaction already took hold of our lives. With blockchain we are still in the phase where we can participate in changing the form of trust, ownership and cooperation.”

Over the course of 8 in-depth interviews, a diverse range of experts and thinkers will discuss ideas about how blockchain is already redesigning the concept of trust, the very cornerstone of our societies and economies.
